On Square Free in the United States, tap, dip, or swipe payments are 2.6% + $0.15; online payments and invoices are 3.3% + $0.30; Online API payments are 2.9% + $0.30; and manual or card-on-file payments are 3.5% + $0.15.

Square Plus and Premium can have lower rates for some payment types. Cards issued outside the country of the Square account add 1.5%. Rates checked September 12, 2026 against Square's official U.S. fee guide.

Example: $100 in person on Square Free

At 2.6% + $0.15, the estimated fee is $2.75 and the estimated net payout is $97.25.

Example: $100 online on Square Free

At 3.3% + $0.30, the estimated online fee is $3.60 and the estimated net payout is $96.40.

Example: $100 from an international card in person

Adding the 1.5% international-card fee to the Free in-person rate produces an estimated fee of $4.25 and a net payout of $95.75.

Which Square rate should you choose?

Select the plan and acceptance method that match the transaction. Online, invoice, API, card-on-file, and in-person payments can use different rates even when the amount is identical.

Does Square charge fees on tax and tips?

Square states that its payment-processing fee applies to the transaction total, including tax and tip. Enter the full amount charged to the customer when estimating the fee.

Who pays the Square processing fee?

Square deducts the processing fee before transferring funds to the linked bank account, so the seller receives the charge amount minus the applicable fee.

Does Square charge for cash or check payments?

Square does not charge a payment-processing fee when a transaction is recorded as cash, check, or another non-card tender. This calculator is for the selected electronic payment methods, not cash sales.

  • ACH, Afterpay, Cash App Pay, Bitcoin, gift cards, EBT, custom pricing, refunds, and instant-transfer fees are not modeled.
